Dr. Or Graur is an Associate Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Portsmouth's Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, with affiliations at the American Museum of Natural History and University College London. He specializes in supernovae, tidal disruption events, and cosmology-driven surveys like the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). His research explores stellar explosions, transient phenomena, and galaxy environments, combining observational data from ground- and space-based telescopes. Graur's work bridges astrophysics with cultural astronomy, such as analyzing ancient Egyptian sky depictions for astronomical insights.
- PhD: Physics and Astronomy, Tel-Aviv University (2013)
- Postdoctoral roles at Johns Hopkins University (2013-2014), New York University (2014-2016), and Harvard & Smithsonian (2016-2020)
Research interests include Type Ia supernova progenitors, late-stage supernova evolution, tidal disruption events, and their galactic hosts. He leads projects like the MOST Hosts Survey (spectroscopic analysis of transient hosts) and collaborates on citizen science initiatives like GOTO. Graur is also an active science communicator, authoring popular articles and books on astronomy.
