Dr. Omar Faruque is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Florida State University (FSU), serving as Graduate Director (ECE) and affiliated with the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS). He holds a Ph.D. in Power Engineering from the University of Alberta (2008), an MEng.Sc. from the University of Malaya (1999), and a BSc.Engg. from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (1993).
His research focuses on real-time simulation applications in power systems, including ship electric systems, bulk power system monitoring, smart grids, and renewable energy integration. Current projects funded by DOE and ONR include developing Lyapunov-based stability tools, FEEDER consortium activities for distributed energy resources, and fault management in MVDC systems.
Research highlights include hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulation for power system interactions, FACTS, HVDC, and electric ship technology. His work emphasizes experimental validation and collaboration with industry partners. Dr. Faruque’s lab facilities at CAPS support advanced power system testing and real-time emulation.
Grant-funded projects include:
- DOE: Lyapunov Function-Based Remedial Action Screening Tool
- DOE: FEEDER Consortium for Distributed Energy Education
- ONR: Fault Management in MVDC Systems
- ONR: DC Distribution System Control for Electric Ships
Publications span IEEE Transactions and IET journals, addressing multi-domain simulation challenges and real-time digital tools.
