Dr. Omar El-Shafee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) since 2016. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from RPI (2011 and 2016 respectively). His expertise lies in geotechnical earthquake engineering, soil dynamics, and centrifuge modeling. He serves as the course coordinator for Strength of Materials (2017–present) and teaches core engineering courses including Intro to Engineering Analysis and Design.
His research focuses on centrifuge testing for soil liquefaction under biaxial dynamic excitations, numerical modeling of geotechnical systems, and soil-structure interaction. He advises the RPI Geowall team, which won a national competition in 2020. Dr. El-Shafee has also taught in Egypt, focusing on geotechnical engineering and undergraduate thesis mentoring.
Key contributions include advancing centrifuge-based methodologies for assessing site liquefaction and developing educational innovations like immersive engineering design courses. He is a reviewer for journals such as Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering and actively participates in academic governance as a faculty senator representing contingent faculty.
His publications (2011–2024) emphasize centrifuge experiments, biaxial excitation analysis, and geotechnical hazard mitigation. Beyond research, he advocates for pedagogical excellence, comparing teaching to 'tailoring a suit for each student.' Current projects likely explore resilient infrastructure through advanced geotechnical modeling techniques.
