Dr. Olukorede Abiona is a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University's Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre and Centre for the Health Economy. Previously, he held roles as a Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (2017–2022) and Lecturer at the University of Leicester (UK). His research focuses on applied economics, particularly human capital outcomes in health, education, and labor, with emphasis on policy evaluation and development economics. He employs advanced econometric methods to assess interventions, including studies linking administrative and survey data to investigate healthcare policies, extreme weather impacts on food security, and mental health programs. Olukorede earned his PhD in Development and Health Economics from the University of Leicester (2016).
Key research interests include climate change effects on health systems, aged care economics, and health systems performance across high-income countries. He has collaborated internationally through initiatives like ICCONIC, analyzing high-need populations. His work bridges development economics and health policy, addressing challenges in both developed and developing nations.
Research Outputs: Over 24 publications since 2014, with recent emphasis on climate-induced health workforce challenges, mental health policy during pandemics, and drought impacts on birth outcomes. His studies frequently highlight gender disparities and policy design for vulnerable populations.
Grants & Advising: Currently leading a 2024 NSW Health-funded project on climate change impacts. Actively supervises PhD students in applied economics and human capital outcomes. Engaged in policy consultations and international collaborative research networks.
