Dr. Fiona Charlson is an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland's Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) and Principal Research Fellow at the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR). She specializes in psychiatric epidemiology and health services research, with a focus on global mental health challenges, climate change impacts on psychological wellbeing, and mental health system transformations. Her work bridges clinical insights with public health policy, emphasizing vulnerable populations in conflict zones and climate-affected regions.
Her research explores the intersections of mental health with environmental stressors, particularly climate anxiety mechanisms, resilience frameworks, and evidence-based interventions. She investigates psychiatric epidemiology through advanced quantitative methods, global burden of disease metrics, and systemic approaches to complex health challenges like schizophrenia comorbidities and suicide prevention.
Charlson's publications predominantly analyze climate-related mental health outcomes (e.g., heatwave-linked suicide, youth climate anxiety) and global mental health system reforms. Methodologically, her work emphasizes epidemiological modeling, systematic reviews, and transdisciplinary approaches, consistently advocating for scalable psychological interventions and policy-oriented solutions.
She leads the Mental Health and Climate Change Research Network and coordinates the Social and Emotional Wellbeing group within UQ's Climate Change and Health Transdisciplinary Impact Research Network. Her collaborations include partnerships with Queensland Health, WHO, NIH, and institutions in low-resource settings, supported by competitive grants targeting mental health service gaps in Pacific Island nations and conflict-affected areas.
