Key areas of interest include the transmission of entrepreneurial values across generations, the interplay between family identity and corporate branding, and the strategic challenges faced by family businesses in global markets. His work frequently examines cases from both mature and emerging economies, such as Sweden and Rwanda.
Brunninge’s studies on corporate heritage branding highlight how firms strategically use historical references to build competitive advantages while navigating tensions between tradition and modernization. He also investigates governance structures and ownership transitions in family businesses, including mechanisms for maintaining socioemotional wealth alongside financial performance.
His research outputs span over two decades, with contributions to understanding organizational memory, strategic adaptation in high-growth firms, and the role of stakeholders in shaping family business trajectories. Collaborations with international institutions have expanded his analysis to contexts like Ethiopia and Africa, emphasizing sustainable entrepreneurship and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
