Olivier Marchès is a Non-Clinical Lecturer in Microbiology at the Centre for Immunobiology within the Blizard Institute, part of Queen Mary University of London. With a PhD from University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse (2003), he has focused on Escherichia coli pathogenesis, particularly enteropathogenic (EPEC) and enterohaemorrhagic (EHEC) strains, throughout his career at Imperial College (2003-2007) and QMUL since 2007.
- Education: PhD in Molecular & Cellular Basis of E. coli Virulence (University Paul Sabatier, France)
- Postdoctoral Training: Marie Curie Fellow at Imperial College studying E. coli
His research investigates the molecular cross-talk between pathogenic E. coli and host cells, focusing on type III secretion system effectors that manipulate mucosal immunity. Key findings include characterization of NleC and NleE effectors that degrade NF-κB and suppress immune responses.
Recent publications reveal his work spans bacterial pathogenesis (41%), immunology (33%), and molecular biology (26%), with subfields including:
- Effector protein mechanisms
- Immune signaling pathway disruption
- Epithelial barrier function
- Protease activity in virulence
- Apoptosis modulation
- Dendritic cell suppression
Scientific contributions include:
- Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship
- Higher Education Academy fellowship
Teaching leadership spans multiple programs including:
- BSc Infection, Immunology & Inflammation (module lead)
- MSc Clinical Microbiology (module lead)
- MBBS medical education
- Postgraduate Infection Science instruction
