Oliver Stone is a Group Leader and Wellcome Sir Henry Dale Fellow at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG). His research focuses on understanding how developmental processes specify the heterogeneous cell subtypes found within the vertebrate vasculature, with particular emphasis on endothelial cell differentiation and lineage history.
Dr. Stone completed his PhD at the University of Bristol studying neovascularization of adult tissues with David Bates, followed by postdoctoral training with Didier Stainier at the University of California, San Francisco and Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research.
His research program investigates the dynamic interplay between cell growth, differentiation and morphogenesis during embryonic development. Using zebrafish and mouse models, his lab has made significant contributions to understanding the transcriptional regulation of endothelial/blood cell differentiation and the origins of lymphatic endothelium. Current work focuses on how lineage history impacts the terminal fate and function of endothelial cells in blood and lymphatic vessels.
Dr. Stone's publication record shows a consistent focus on vascular development and endothelial cell specification, with recent work (2023-2025) particularly emphasizing lymphatic endothelial cell specification from mesenchymal progenitors and how endothelial cells sense dietary metabolites to maintain tissue homeostasis. His work bridges developmental biology, vascular biology, and metabolic regulation.

Dr. Stone's research group is funded by a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society. His lab employs cutting-edge techniques including zebrafish and mouse models, single-cell RNA sequencing, and advanced imaging to investigate vascular development. He has established collaborations with several leading researchers in the vascular biology field, including Friedemann Kiefer, Dave Grainger, and Taija Mäkinen.
