Oliver Plümper is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University (Netherlands). His research bridges fluid-rock interaction, nanogeosciences, mineral physics, and rock deformation to explore how minerals respond to environmental changes caused by fluids and stress at the nanometer scale. This work addresses critical earth science questions about the deep Earth water cycle, carbon cycle, earthquakes, and carbon sequestration through interdisciplinary methods integrating geology, chemistry, computational science, and advanced microscopy.
- Education
- University of Münster (Germany) – Geosciences
- PhD (2012) at the Center for Physics of Geological Processes (PGP), University of Oslo (Norway)
Research Interests: Oliver focuses on nanoscale mineral behavior under stress and fluid exposure, applying these insights to macro-scale geological phenomena. His work leverages cutting-edge electron microscopy and numerical simulations to advance understanding of Earth's dynamic processes.
Scientific Leadership & Awards: He has received prestigious personal grants from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the European Research Council (ERC), alongside industry funding. His accolades include the 2018 Goldschmidt Award (DMG) and the 2021 Research Excellence Medal (European Mineralogical Union).
Outreach & Coordination: Active in open science initiatives across Europe, Oliver frequently contributes to national/international media, coordinates symposia, and serves on the editorial board of Geology, a leading geology journal.
