Joel Brugger is a Professor at Monash University’s School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment, holding the Synchrotron Geosciences Chair since 2014. He obtained his PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 1996, focusing on metamorphosed syn-genetic exhalative Mn deposits. His research group, Minerals, Microbes and Solutions, employs advanced experimental techniques to study metal transport, mineral-microbe-fluid interactions, and geochemical processes. Key contributions include work on copper-gold systems, carbon-neutral metal extraction, and rare earth element dynamics. He leads multiple high-impact projects funded by organizations like the Australian Research Council and the Geological Survey of Western Australia.
- Education: PhD in Geochemistry, University of Basel (1996)
- Research Focus: Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Environmental Geology, Sustainable Development Goals
Recent projects include investigating trace elements in crustal fluid flow and developing carbon-sequestration methods for copper production. His interdisciplinary work bridges geology, microbiology, and materials science, with applications to resource sustainability and environmental protection.
- Active Projects: Carbon-neutral copper (2021–2026), Copper isotope systematics (2024–2027)
- Grants: ARC, Geological Survey of Western Australia
Brugger’s lab utilizes synchrotron-based techniques and advanced microscopy, such as in-operando micromechanical SEM, to explore mineral behavior under dynamic conditions. His research has implications for resource exploration, pollution mitigation, and understanding geological processes at the atomic scale.
