Oliver Plessow is Professor of History Didactics at the University of Rostock since February 2015, affiliated with the Historical Institute within the Faculty of Humanities. Previously, he served as Deputy Professor of History Didactics during the Winter Semester 2014/15 and held various academic positions at the University of Kassel from 2009-2014.
Professor Plessow's research focuses on the pedagogical approach to mass crimes and experiences of dictatorship, transnational Holocaust education, memorial education, historical culture, and the culture of remembrance. His work examines historical learning in extracurricular youth and young adult contexts and explores the interlinking of global and regional history learning.
His publications demonstrate expertise in medieval history and historiography, with notable works including The City in the Middle Ages (2013), and studies on medieval chess as cultural transmission. His research shows a consistent thread connecting historical methodology with contemporary educational applications, particularly in how societies process difficult historical experiences.
Professor Plessow's academic journey began with studies in German, History, Modern History, German Studies and Political Science at the University of Münster (1990-1997), where he also completed his doctorate in Medieval History in 2003 with a dissertation on historiography in Münster between Diocese and City.
