Prof. Oliver Marchart holds a Professorship for Political Theory at the Institute of Political Science, University of Vienna since 2016. He previously held positions at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (2012-2016), University of Lucerne (2006-2012), and University of Basel (2001-2006). His academic journey includes a Master's in Philosophy from the University of Vienna, a PhD from the University of Essex, and dual habilitation in Philosophy and Sociology from Lucerne.
Research focuses on political theory, democratic theory, social movement analysis, and political discourse. He co-leads the 'Constructivist Theories of Politics' working group at the German Association for Political Science. Current research projects include ERC-funded 'PREDEF' (2022-2027) exploring democratic futures and ANA-funded 'AGONART' analyzing cultural policy conflicts.
His scholarly contributions span monographs, edited volumes, and articles addressing antagonism, radical democracy, and post-foundational theories. Awards include prestigious fellowships at Columbia University, Konstanz, and multiple IFK Vienna residencies.
