Oliver M. Brandes serves as Co-Director of the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance and Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships and Public Policy at the University of Victoria's Centre for Global Studies. He holds an adjunct professorship in both the Faculty of Law and School of Public Administration, with additional affiliations at the University of Manitoba and Brock University.

As an economist and lawyer by training with a trans-disciplinary approach, Brandes focuses on water sustainability, ecological governance, and public policy development. His work bridges academic research with practical policy solutions through the POLIS Project, addressing sound resource management and ecologically based legal reforms. Recent research has expanded into wildfire resilience and watershed security, examining how beneficial fires can maintain ecological integrity while protecting communities. He actively integrates Indigenous knowledge with contemporary science to develop collaborative environmental governance frameworks.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on practical policy implementation for complex environmental challenges, with increasing emphasis on whole-of-society approaches to wildfire management and water governance that recognize diverse stakeholder roles and responsibilities.
Brandes leads the award-winning POLIS Water Sustainability Project and has contributed to significant policy developments including B.C.'s Water Sustainability Act.
As a technical advisor to the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, he supports legislative development and provides ongoing guidance to governments and Indigenous nations on watershed governance across multiple regions including Koksilah, Cowichan, Skeena, Nicola, Hullcar, and Coquitlam watersheds. His 2017 independent expert review on source drinking water protection resulted in regulatory changes and informed the Auditor General of British Columbia's work. He actively fosters dialogue through national Watersheds forums and serves as Chair of the Forum for Leadership on Water (FLOW).
Brandes directs the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, which encompasses the Water Sustainability Project and the POLIS Wildfire Resilience Project. He chairs the decade-long series of biennial national Watersheds forums and advises numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations including the First Nations Fisheries Council, Freshwater Legacy Initiative, and Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources.
