Prof. Oliver Huck is a Professor of Historical Musicology at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and the Institute for Historical Musicology. He serves as a key member of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (UWA) and previously led the CSMC Graduate School from 2011–2020. His research focuses on medieval music manuscripts, liturgical practices, and the cultural history of music, particularly in Europe. He leads projects exploring polyphonic music manuscripts, angelic imagery in symphonic works, and the transmission of sacred music texts. Prof. Huck’s work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to manuscript studies, examining how musical artifacts reflect cultural, religious, and artistic practices across eras.
His research projects include the SFB 950 ‘Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’ and the UWA cluster, where he investigates manuscripts as original creative works. He has published extensively on topics such as medieval monophony, 16th-century organists, and the manuscripts of John Coltrane. His teaching and supervision emphasize historical musicology and the intersection of music with literature and film. Prof. Huck is actively involved in organizing academic workshops, including the 2017 conference on liturgical manuscripts, and maintains a robust record of international scholarly engagement.
