Oliver Buchholz is a Research Fellow at ETH Zurich, leading the independent research project MLS² (Machine Learning, Science, and Society) funded by an ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship. He is an associate member of the Interchange Forum for Reflecting on Intelligent Systems (IRIS) at the University of Stuttgart. His work bridges philosophy of science, epistemology, and machine learning, focusing on topics like explainable AI, scientific methodology, and ethical implications of AI.
He holds a PhD and MA in Philosophy, alongside an MSc in Economics and Finance, all from the University of Tübingen. Previously, he researched at Tübingen’s Cluster of Excellence on Machine Learning and contributed to projects like 'AITE – Artificial Intelligence, Trustworthiness, and Explainability.'
His research emphasizes the epistemic and ethical dimensions of machine learning, including its role in healthcare, social sciences, and public policy. Notable contributions include frameworks for explainable AI and analyses of machine learning’s methodological challenges in diverse scientific contexts.
Buchholz has presented at conferences such as the International Philosophy of Medicine Roundtable and the ‘ML, Explain Yourself!’ conference in Utrecht. His work is published in journals like Synthese and Studies in History and Philosophy of Science.
