Oliver Bown is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), specializing in the intersection of anthropology, technology, and creative practices. He is an active contributor to the CASTAC Blog (Committee for the Anthropology of Science, Technology, and Computing), where he explores the role of ethnography in creative computing systems.
His research interests center on ethnography within the context of technology design, particularly in music improvisation systems and human-computer interaction. He has a background in social anthropology and is re-engaging with ethnographic methodology to uncover implicit practices in the development of experimental machine-based creative systems. His work bridges anthropological theory with practical applications in artificial intelligence and the arts.
His recent publication, Uncovering Ethnography in Creative Practice Research with Machines (2025), exemplifies his focus on revealing the hidden ethnographic elements in the creation of new technological systems for music improvisation. This work highlights the importance of designers' personal domain experience and advocates for more explicit ethnographic documentation in technical work.
