Ole Christian Lind is a Full Professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), affiliated with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management, specifically the Section for Environmental Chemistry. He is Head of Research Area 5 at the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC) and the scientific lead for the FIGARO gamma-UV irradiation facility at NMBU. He serves as Deputy Chair of the Faculty Research Committee (MINA) at NMBU and is an active member of several international expert groups, including the AMAP expert group on Arctic radioactivity, the IAEA CRP projects, and the Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG).
His research focuses on radioecology and environmental chemistry, with expertise in the speciation and source identification of radionuclides using advanced techniques such as electron microscopy, synchrotron-based micro- and nanofocused X-ray techniques, and accelerator mass spectrometry. His work emphasizes the characterization of environmental particles, including radioactive particles and micro- to nanometer-sized plastics. He also investigates environmental impact and risk assessments, modeling contaminant transport, uptake in organisms, and biological effects from multiple stressors.
The most recent articles reflect a strong trend in radiation effects on plants and aquatic organisms, particularly in conifers like Norway spruce and Scots pine, as well as in model organisms like Daphnia magna and Caenorhabditis elegans. There is also a significant focus on microplastics and tire wear particles, including their environmental distribution and toxicological implications. Advanced synchrotron-based imaging is frequently used to study metal and radionuclide biodistribution. Additionally, atmospheric and marine transport modeling for nuclear preparedness, especially related to incidents at Sellafield or in the Arctic, features prominently in his recent work.
- Former member of the advisory committee, Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND)
- Former board member, NorScatt (Norwegian organization for users of synchrotron and neutron radiation)
- Scientific contributor to the Plutonium Handbook (2nd edition)
- Active participant in CERAD Centre of Excellence research
He has supervised MSc and PhD students and taught courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, radiation and radiochemistry, and radioecology. He has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to numerous reports and book chapters. His leadership in research infrastructure and international collaborations underscores his significant role in advancing environmental radioactivity science.
