Olaf van Vliet is a Professor of Economics at Leiden University, holding positions in both the Department of Economics and the Institute of Public Administration. He also serves as the Head of the Department of Economics. His research focuses on welfare state analysis, labor economics, and political economy, with an emphasis on topics such as welfare state reform, globalization, technological change, migration, and income inequality.
Van Vliet completed his PhD in Economics at Leiden University, along with a BSc and MSc in Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and a BA and MA in Public Administration from Leiden University.
His research interests span digitalization economics, labor market dynamics, migration policies, non-standard employment, social policy, and technological change. He explores how these factors influence unemployment and social security systems, particularly in the context of European welfare states.
As an academic leader, he oversees the Horizon Europe research program TransEuroWorkS and the Social Citizenship & Migration program. He also coordinates the MSc program in Economics and Governance.
He holds advisory roles in various institutions, including the Dutch Institute for Social Security (NISZ), the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC), and the Board of Directors of IMISCOE. His leadership extends to visiting professorships and research fellowships at institutions like Harvard University and the Central University of Finance and Economics.
