Olaf Bärenfänger is a Professor and Director of the Language Center at the University of Leipzig. He holds a Dr. phil. and Habilitation from Bielefeld and Leipzig universities, specializing in German Philology, Philosophy, and empirical foreign language research.
- Education: Studied at Heidelberg and Paris-Sorbonne universities (1993-1998); Doctorate at Bielefeld University (1998-2003); Habilitation at Leipzig University (2003-2015).
His research focuses on test science, competence assessment, and digital foreign language didactics, particularly for German as an educational language. Recent projects include developing digital language curricula (A1-B1) and competence models for academic/professional contexts (B1-C1). He emphasizes methodological rigor and the societal application of linguistic findings.
Olaf Bärenfänger serves on multiple national and international committees, including the Goethe-Institut, DAAD, and Deutsche Welle, advising on language policy, test development, and vocational training. He co-founded the Institute for Test Research and Test Development to bridge academic and practical needs.
