Dr. Olaf Bachmann is a Visiting Professor and Senior Research Fellow at King's College London's African Leadership Centre (ALC) within the School of Global Affairs. He holds a PhD and MA in War Studies from King’s. His research focuses on African Peace and Security Architecture, governance of security, and state formation in Central Africa. He co-founded a consultancy specializing in security governance and institution building. He teaches on security governance and state formation at the ALC and is affiliated with the War Studies Africa Research Group and War Crimes Research Group. His work critiques Western-centric civil-military paradigms and explores African state-building dynamics.
Education: PhD and MA in War Studies (King’s College London), BA in War in the Modern World (King’s).
Research Interests: African military structures, post-colonial state-building, civil-military relations, and peace processes in conflict zones. His books, such as Quasi-Armies and State-Building in Africa (2025), challenge conventional state-building frameworks and examine 'quasi-armies' in Africa. Another work, Whose Peace Are We Building? (2021), addresses leadership roles in African peace initiatives.
