Ola Didrik Saugstad is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Oslo and Director of the Department of Pediatric Research at the National Hospital. He is internationally renowned for his groundbreaking work in neonatal resuscitation, particularly demonstrating the dangers of using 100% oxygen during newborn resuscitation, leading to global guideline changes. His research focuses on hypoxia, oxygen radicals, and lung injury mechanisms in neonates. He has held leadership roles in organizations like the European Association of Perinatal Medicine and the International Pediatric Foundation.
Education: Graduated with a cand. med. degree from the University of Oslo in 1973, followed by research fellowships at Uppsala University Hospital and the National Hospital in Norway.
Research Interests: Neonatal resuscitation protocols, hypoxia-reoxygenation injury, purine metabolism, and oxygen radical effects in neonates. His work has saved an estimated 200,000 newborn lives annually through guideline reforms.
Awards: Includes the Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav (2010), Honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens (2014), and the SalusAnsvar Nordic Medical Award (2012). He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
Publications: Over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, focusing on neonatal oxygenation, resuscitation techniques, and long-term outcomes of preterm infants. Recent work includes studies on antibiotic resistance in preterm infants and the impact of nicotine on neonatal inflammation.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Pediatric Research Institute at the National Hospital, collaborating globally on neonatal care advancements.
