Nydia Blas is an Assistant Professor of Art & Visual Culture at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a B.S. in Cinema & Photography from Ithaca College (2011) and an M.F.A. in Art Photography from Syracuse University (2016). Her work focuses on Black femininity, intimacy, and identity through photography, collage, and video. Notable projects include The Girls Who Spun Gold, a collaborative girl-empowerment initiative, and Love, You Came From Greatness, a photobook exploring family lineage.
Blas has exhibited globally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, Paris Photo Festival, and the High Museum of Art. Awards include the 2019 Joop Swart Masterclass and 2021 Carnegie/Rockefeller Award. She teaches at Spelman, Cornell University, and the High Museum of Art, emphasizing storytelling and visual literacy. Her community initiatives include leadership roles at the Southside Community Center and the Girl Empowerment Group.
