Nushrat Azam

Nushrat Azam is a Lecturer in the School of Communications, Language & Literature at Fiji National University and a PhD candidate at Charles Sturt University’s School of Social Work & Arts. Her research focuses on gender performativity, postcolonial literature, and South Asian women’s narratives. She holds an MA in Literature from the University of the South Pacific, where her thesis explored voices and silences in postcolonial female characters.

Her creative and academic work bridges feminist theory with literary analysis, including her published short story collection The Girl with a Mirror. Key research interests include the representation of female identity across postcolonial texts, the concept of ‘the Other,’ and the intersection of cultural norms with gender expression. Nushrat’s scholarship has been featured in journals like International Journal of Applied Linguistics & English Literature and European Journal of Literature, Language & Linguistic Studies.

As a PhD candidate at Charles Sturt University, her current project, Silence of the Mirror: Gender Performance and Multiple Identities of Female Characters belonging to South Asian backgrounds, examines evolving female identities in postcolonial literature through creative writing and exegesis. Supported by the AGRTP scholarship, her work contributes to feminist literary discourse and UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and gender equality.

Nushrat has also served as a reviewer for journals such as International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science and Mualim Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities, reflecting her active engagement in academic peer review.
