Nuria Ciofalo is a Core Professor in the Community, Liberation, Indigenous, and Eco-Psychologies specialization at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Born in Mexico, she holds a Ph.D. in Community Psychology from the University of Hawaii and earlier degrees from the University of Munich, including a B.A. and M.A. in Clinical/Social Psychology and an M.A. in Urban/Regional Planning. Her work focuses on Indigenous cosmologies, epistemologies, and healing practices, emphasizing participatory action research with communities.
Over 40 years, she has collaborated with Indigenous communities in Hawaii and Mexico, particularly the Maya Lacandon youths and leaders of Chiapas. Her research spans decolonial methodologies, program evaluation, and youth action research. A key publication is her 2019 co-authored book Indigenous Psychologies in an Era of Decolonization, developed through partnerships with Indigenous communities.
Dr. Ciofalo’s teaching integrates Indigenous knowledge systems into academic frameworks, advocating for community-centered approaches to psychological practice and social justice. Her work bridges theory and grassroots activism, prioritizing culturally rooted healing and sovereignty movements.
