Nuno Castel-Branco is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College, University of Oxford, specializing in early modern European intellectual and cultural history. He holds a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology from Johns Hopkins University, an M.Sc. in Physics, and a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon.
His research focuses on interdisciplinary interactions between physics, medicine, and theology in early modern Europe. He is currently concluding a book on Nicolaus Steno, emphasizing Steno’s integration of mathematics and chymistry into anatomy and his collaborations across disciplines and social spheres. A second project examines the cooperation of mathematicians, anatomists, and patrons in early 17th-century Italy and Iberia. He co-organizes workshops on science and religion at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin.
Key awards include the A. H. Oliveira Marques Prize for his article on Portuguese science and religion (2022) and fellowships from Villa I Tatti, the Max Planck Institute, and Johns Hopkins University. His work bridges global histories of science, including Jesuit missionary contributions in the Mughal Empire.
He has held roles such as Associate Member of the ERC Rutter Project (University of Lisbon) and has been affiliated with institutions like Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and the Huntington Library. His research often highlights material culture and the social dimensions of scientific practice.
