Nuno Carvalhais

Nuno Carvalhais is a Group Leader and Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, leading the Model-Data Integration group. He holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from the New University of Lisbon (2010) and has conducted postdoctoral research at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry. His research focuses on terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, model-data fusion approaches, biogeochemical cycles, vegetation remote sensing, and hybrid modeling. He is also a member of ELLIS Jena, contributing to AI-driven environmental research.

Key projects include SeasFire, ESM2025, and SINDBAD, alongside past initiatives like CRESCENDO and BIOMASCAT. His work integrates machine learning with Earth system science to address challenges in carbon cycle modeling, disturbance regimes, and climate-vegetation interactions. He has authored/co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from forest dynamics to global carbon turnover.

Carvalhais collaborates with international teams and leverages high-resolution satellite data (e.g., MODIS, Landsat) for ecosystem monitoring. His research emphasizes bridging observational data with process-based models to improve predictions of terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change.
