Nuno Bandeira is an Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), affiliated with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He serves as Executive Director of the NIH-funded Biomedical Technology Research Center for Computational Mass Spectrometry. His research focuses on computational mass spectrometry, particularly the Spectral Networks paradigm for de novo protein sequencing and identifying post-translational modifications. This approach leverages overlapping peptide spectra to reconstruct protein sequences and detect modifications, addressing challenges in proteomics.
His work includes advancements in clustering large-scale MS/MS datasets (MS-Clustering), developing spectral dictionaries for database searches (MS-Dictionary), and sequencing nonribosomal peptides. He has contributed to breakthroughs in de novo antibody sequencing and accelerating drug discovery from natural compounds. Bandeira has received the HUPO 2006 Young Investigator Award and has been active in organizing conferences like RECOMB and Algorithmic Biology workshops.
His research spans algorithm design, statistical methods, and interdisciplinary collaborations with institutions like Genentech and the Broad Institute. Bandeira's lab develops open-source tools for proteomics data analysis, emphasizing high-throughput methods and innovative spectral analysis techniques.
