Dr Nozomi Abe (she/her) is a Lecturer in Japanese at Cardiff University's School of Modern Languages. She is a translation scholar and professional translator (English-Japanese/Japanese-English) specialising in theatre, subtitling, and medical translation/transcription.
- Educated at the University of Edinburgh (MSc in Translation Studies) and University of East Anglia (PhD in Literary Translation)
Her research interests focus on cross-cultural communication through translation, with particular emphasis on dramatic texts, subtitling for streaming platforms, and medical terminology. She has extensive professional experience in theatrical translation, having rendered works like Mary Stuart, Anna Karenina, and The Bodyguard the Musical for Tokyo productions, and also contributes to English translations of Japanese musicals.
Currently serving as a judge for The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation Translation Prize 2023/24, Dr Abe maintains strong industry connections while advancing academic translation pedagogy as an educator.
