Norton Wise is a Research Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His work focuses on the history of science in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly the intersections of industrialization, cultural history, and the role of narrative in scientific practices. He has edited special issues such as 'Narrative in Science' (SHPS—A, 2017) and authored books like Science without Laws (2007) and the forthcoming Aesthetics, Industry, and Science (2018).
His research explores how technologies mediate relationships between science and society, blending theoretical and practical understanding. Recent projects include collaborations on the industrial transformations of the English landscape garden in Berlin.
Wise's publications emphasize methodologies that integrate material culture, visual studies, and transnational perspectives to analyze scientific practices as historical phenomena. His work often bridges disciplinary divides between natural philosophy, technology, and social sciences.
