Ben Wise is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Florida, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He previously taught at Harvard University and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His research examines cultural history, moral politics, southern history, and the history of gender and sexuality, with a current focus on cultural conflicts over religion, politics, and history education in America. Wise has led undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from introductory U.S. History surveys to specialized topics like the Jazz Age.
His work is distinguished by cross-disciplinary collaboration, notably with art theorist Craig Smith, resulting in books such as William Alexander Percy: The Curious Life of a Mississippi Planter and Sexual Freethinker (2012) and 2024 publications The Collection and American Ace. These projects have also involved exhibitions at the Harn Museum of Art and national talks/showings.

Wise’s research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Center for the Study of the American South (UNC), and others. His writing spans journals like Southern Cultures and Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, as well as legal publications like William Mitchell Law Review, highlighting intersections between history, law, and cultural studies.
As Undergraduate Coordinator for nearly a decade, he has shaped departmental education strategy while maintaining a robust teaching and research profile.
