Norma Ware, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor (part-time) in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Her research focuses on the social and behavioral dimensions of HIV prevention and treatment in sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on qualitative methods to improve healthcare delivery. Ware collaborates with institutions including the University of Washington, Makerere University, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute to address challenges in HIV self-testing, PrEP adherence, and community-based healthcare systems.
Her work explores interventions such as mobile outreach in Lake Victoria fishing communities, integrated delivery of PrEP and ART services, and real-time adherence monitoring using urine tenofovir testing. Current projects include evaluating HIVST secondary distribution processes and studying the impact of gender-based violence on healthcare access in Uganda. Ware also investigates periconception PrEP use in South African women and the adaptation of HIV clinics during the pandemic.
Key partnerships include the Center for Global Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University. Her research bridges anthropological insights with public health policy, emphasizing community engagement and healthcare worker perspectives to enhance intervention effectiveness. Ware teaches at Harvard Medical School and mentors junior investigators in global health research.
