Norma Laura Zarzosa is an Instructor in the Department of English and Modern Languages at Lamar University since 2006. A 1997 graduate with a B.S. in Applied Arts and Sciences, she was among the first Hispanic students at Lamar University when she enrolled in 1992. Her academic journey included completing an associate degree at the now-defunct Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) before transitioning to Lamar University for her bachelor’s degree.
Her career in education began post-graduation, when she pursued pedagogy courses as a non-degree-seeking student to obtain Texas educator certification. Lamar University nominated her as an educator, enabling her to teach Spanish professionally. She emphasizes the university’s role in shaping her career and its evolving diversity, noting the student demographic grew from 3% Hispanic in 1997 to nearly 25% by her interview in 2023. Zarzosa actively advocates for Hispanic representation and institutional inclusivity.
Her professional focus includes language education, cultural preservation, and fostering educational equity. She takes pride in Lamar’s progress toward becoming a Hispanic-friendly institution, citing increased faculty and student diversity as key achievements.
