Dr. Noreen Breakey is a Lecturer in the School of Business at the University of Queensland (UQ). She joined UQ's tourism team in 2005 and has held roles such as Director of Undergraduate Programs and Member of the award-winning MTHEM Foundation Year Teaching Team. Her research focuses on sustainable tourism, environmental ethics, ecotourism, and tourism education. She holds a PhD in Tourism Destination Development from UQ (2006) and has supervised six PhD students to completion. Dr. Breakey is an active member of Ecotourism Australia, serving on its Board of Directors (2019–2023). Prior to academia, she worked in tourism industry roles, including destination management and government planning at Tourism Events Queensland. She has published extensively, with over 50 works including books, book chapters, and journal articles. Her teaching innovations include designing the Masters course Disciplinary Foundations of Tourism, Hospitality & Events, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address industry challenges.
Education: PhD in Tourism Destination Development, UQ (2006); prior industry experience in hotels, resorts, and government roles globally.
Research Interests: Sustainable tourism practices, environmental ethics, ecotourism in protected areas, and tourism education. She advocates for biocultural tourism and virtuous traveler ethics, drawing from Aldo Leopold's philosophy. Recent work explores stress mitigation for international students and conflict management in community-based tourism projects.
Publications Trends: Her articles span education innovation, environmental impact studies, and community-tourism dynamics. Key themes include internships' career impacts, resident environmental attitudes, and stress management in student populations.
Awards: UQ Excellence in Teaching & Learning Award for contributions to student learning.
