Professor Norbert W. Mitzel is a distinguished academic in the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Bielefeld, where he holds the position of Professor (W3) for Inorganic Chemistry and Structural Chemistry since April 2007. He has served in significant administrative roles including as Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry in Bielefeld from April 2013 to October 2015 and as Chairman (2021-2023) and Deputy Chairman (2019-2021 and 2023-2025) of the Association of German University Professors for Chemistry (ADUC). His academic journey includes professorships at the University of Münster (2002-2007) and earlier postdoctoral work at the University of Edinburgh and TU Munich.
Professor Mitzel's research focuses on two primary areas: Molecular Inorganic Chemistry of Main Group Elements and Structural Chemistry. His work on Poly-Lewis Acids (PLA), Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLP), Lewis Superacids (including fluorine-free variants), and Chiral Bidentate Lewis Acids has positioned him as a leader in main group element chemistry. His structural chemistry research employs advanced techniques including Gas Electron Diffraction, In Situ Crystal Growth and Low Temperature X-Ray Diffraction, Electron Density Topology, and Multinuclear NMR Spectroscopy. His publication record demonstrates consistent high-impact contributions, with numerous articles published in top-tier chemistry journals through 2025.
Analysis of his recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a strong focus on the design and application of poly-Lewis acids for host-guest chemistry, frustrated Lewis pairs involving main group elements like antimony and phosphorus, and structural studies of novel compounds. His work demonstrates an integration of synthetic chemistry, structural analysis, and theoretical understanding to develop new molecular systems with specific recognition and reactivity properties. The research spans fundamental structural investigations to applied materials development, particularly in the area of stimuli-responsive molecular systems.
Professor Mitzel has received significant recognition including a Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Research Foundation (2001), the Egon Wiberg Lecture at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (2018), and multiple prestigious fellowships early in his career. He has also organized numerous major conferences including several European Symposia on Gas Electron Diffraction (2013-2019) and German-Austrian Staff Workshops on Main Group Chemistry.
His leadership extends to research management with multiple ongoing projects funded by the German Research Foundation through 2027, focusing on fluorine-free Lewis acids, implementation of the HSAB concept in frustrated Lewis pairs chemistry, and structure determinations of various compounds in solid and gaseous phases. He maintains an active research group producing high-quality publications and contributing significantly to the field of inorganic and structural chemistry.
