Nomdo Jansonius

Prof. Dr. Nomdo Jansonius is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences and heads the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). His academic career spans both physics and medicine, with a specialization in glaucoma research and clinical ophthalmology. Jansonius coordinates the EU-funded doctoral network EGRET AAA (2023-2027) and previously led the EGRET and EGRET+ research training programs (2016-2020). He serves as co-editor of Acta Ophthalmologica and sits on the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

Dr. Jansonius's research primarily focuses on glaucoma, perimetry, optical coherence tomography, physiological optics, retinal physiology, and ophthalmic epidemiology. His work bridges fundamental biophysics with clinical applications, particularly in developing diagnostic methods for glaucoma. He leads the Groningen Glaucoma Group and has made significant contributions to understanding visual field defects, vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients, and the relationship between systemic conditions and ocular diseases.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on vision-related quality of life assessment tools, genetic factors in glaucoma, and comparative studies between glaucoma and other neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease. Jansonius frequently collaborates with international research consortia including the European Eye Epidemiology Consortium and the Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative.
