Professor Noboru Minakawa is a faculty member at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (NEKKEN) of Nagasaki University, Japan, specializing in vector ecology with primary focus on malaria and dengue vectors across Africa and Southeast Asia. His research spans Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Vietnam, and Myanmar through international collaborations.
Education:
- PhD in Aquatic Entomology and Stream Ecology, University of Washington, Seattle, USA
Research Focus: His work centers on African malaria vectors (Anopheles gambiae s.s., Anopheles arabiensis, Anopheles funestus group) and dengue vectors, examining vector population dynamics, climate-disease interactions, and vector control interventions. He emphasizes field-based approaches and community collaboration, stating: "You must go to the field first, and see the problems... the local people will help and teach you."
Publication Trends: Analysis of recent publications (2012-2015) reveals consistent investigation of vector dispersal mechanisms, insecticide-treated net efficacy, and climate drivers of malaria transmission. His work bridges entomology, epidemiology, and public health with strong field application in endemic regions.
Supervision and Collaborations: He supervises Master's students in Nagasaki University's Tropical Medicine program. Research is supported through partnerships with Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, South Africa Medical Research Council, South Africa Department of Technology and Science, and Limpopo Department of Health.
Research Infrastructure: Leads vector ecology field studies across multiple continents through NEKKEN's research group, maintaining active collaborations with International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (Kenya) and national health departments in endemic countries.
