Noah Bassil is an Associate Professor at Macquarie University's School of International Studies, where he focuses on the structural legacies of colonialism and neoliberal capitalism in contemporary politics. His research examines conflicts in regions like Sudan and Darfur through historical analysis, and he uses Gramscian concepts to explore racism as a tool for sustaining inequality.
His research interests include colonial/postcolonial state formation, racial politics, media representations of conflict, and the political economy of the Middle East and Africa. Bassil actively translates academic work into public discourse through media engagements with SkyNews, ABC, SBS, and community forums.
As Associate Dean for Higher Degree Research (2016), he oversaw the implementation of the Master of Research program and managed a team of academic and professional staff. He serves on university committees for curriculum development and policy formulation.
Bassil has supervised 7+ graduate students on topics ranging from ethno-tribal politics in Nigeria to diaspora communities in the Syrian conflict. He received the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s Citation (2012) for outstanding contributions to student learning.
His recent publications analyze settler-colonial memorials in Australia, fascist movements in capitalist crises, and media dynamics in post-Arab Spring Tunisia.
