Niveen Kassem is an Assistant Professor in Arabic Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham Dubai, affiliated with the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music. Her academic work bridges literature, cultural studies, memory, and heritage, with a focus on underrepresented communities in the Middle East and diaspora contexts.
Her research centers on cultural trauma, identity formation, and the interplay between memory and landscape, especially among marginalized groups such as Iraqi Christians and African-American communities. She explores how historical trauma shapes contemporary identities through literature, storytelling, and public history.
Niveen’s recent publications reflect a strong trend in interdisciplinary cultural research, combining literary analysis with ethnographic and heritage-based methodologies. Her work often addresses themes of displacement, memory preservation, and cultural resilience, particularly in post-conflict and diasporic settings.
She has received competitive research funding, including an AHRC-funded project, and holds FHEA status, recognizing her excellence in teaching. Her contributions to pedagogy include innovative strategies for autonomous learning and student transition support.
