معرفی
Professor Ninian Lang is a distinguished academic and clinician serving as Professor of Cardiology and Cardio-Oncology at the University of Glasgow's College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences. He maintains dual clinical appointments as an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at both the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, where he runs the West of Scotland cardio-oncology service.
- Professor of Cardiology and Cardio-Oncology, University of Glasgow
- Honorary Consultant Cardiologist, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
- Honorary Consultant Cardiologist, Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre
- Associate Editor, JACC:CardioOncology
Professor Lang's educational background includes a BSc in Neuroscience (1st class Hons, 1998) and MBChB (2001) from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, where he was awarded the Annandale Gold Medal in Clinical Surgery. He completed his PhD research at the University of Edinburgh, supported by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Cardiovascular Prize Fellowship, which was awarded in 2009.
Professor Lang's research program focuses on the critical intersection between cardiovascular medicine and oncology. His primary research interests include cardio-oncology, heart failure, cardiovascular diseases, and the vascular toxicity associated with anti-cancer therapies. His work specifically examines vascular and myocardial injury induced by established and novel anti-cancer therapies. His research spans both clinical trials and translational investigations, with particular emphasis on understanding and mitigating cardiovascular complications in cancer patients. His work bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications, developing strategies to protect cancer patients from cardiovascular side effects without compromising oncological efficacy.
Analysis of Professor Lang's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on cardio-oncology, with significant contributions to understanding the cardiovascular effects of cancer therapies, particularly VEGF inhibitors and anthracyclines. His work with the IRONMAN trial demonstrates his growing interest in heart failure management, particularly regarding iron deficiency. The publications show a clear pattern of collaborative, multidisciplinary research involving cardiology, oncology, nephrology, and imaging specialists.
- Bristol-Myers Squibb Cardiovascular Prize Fellowship
- Annandale Gold Medal in Clinical Surgery
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh)
- Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology
Professor Lang leads an active research program that integrates clinical practice with translational research. His work includes the West of Scotland cardio-oncology service, which serves as both a clinical service and research platform. He has been instrumental in developing clinical trial protocols for assessing cardiovascular safety in oncology, including the Cardiac CARE trial. His research group collaborates extensively with oncologists, nephrologists, and imaging specialists to address the complex cardiovascular challenges faced by cancer patients. Current projects focus on understanding mechanisms of vascular injury from cancer therapies and developing cardioprotective strategies.
