Ning Sun

Ning Sun is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Biostatistics at Yale School of Public Health. She is affiliated with the Yale Superfund Research Center and contributes to research at the intersection of biostatistics, environmental health, and genomics.

Dr. Sun received her educational training at prestigious institutions:

• PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (1998)
• MS from the University of California at Los Angeles (1994)
• BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tsinghua University (1991)

Dr. Sun's research spans multiple disciplines with a strong foundation in environmental engineering and advanced expertise in biostatistics. She initially focused on modeling contaminant transport in heterogeneous porous media and developed mathematical approaches for colloid surface interactions. Her research has evolved toward statistical methods for transcriptome analysis, regulatory network modeling, data integration, functional genomics, and genome-wide association studies. Her medical research interests include Biostatistics, Genetics, Genomics, Statistics, and Systems Biology, while her public health interests encompass Aging, Cancer, and Genetics/Genomics/Epigenetics.

Dr. Sun's publication record demonstrates a clear research trajectory from environmental engineering to biostatistics and genomics. Her recent work shows increasing focus on environmental toxicology (particularly related to PFAS chemicals and 1,4-dioxane), air pollution epidemiology, and large-scale genomic studies through the Million Veteran Program. She has made significant methodological contributions to statistical genetics while applying these methods to study mental health conditions, addiction, and cancer in veteran populations.

Dr. Sun has established productive collaborations across multiple institutions, with frequent co-authors including Hongyu Zhao (17 publications), Mihaela Aslan (6 publications), Joel Gelernter (4 publications), Nallakkandi Rajeevan (4 publications), John Concato (3 publications), and Vasilis Vasiliou (3 publications).
