Nina Reid-Maroney is a Professor of History at Huron University College, specializing in African Canadian history, the intellectual history of antislavery movements, and feminist historiography. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, an M.A. from the University of Sussex, and a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. Her work bridges academic scholarship and community engagement, notably through initiatives like the transatlantic research exchange Phantoms of the Past: Slavery and Resistance, which connects historical inquiry to contemporary social justice issues. Reid-Maroney’s research emphasizes the intersection of race, religion, and intellectual activism in North America.

Her research interests include 19th-century African Canadian intellectual history, the transatlantic abolitionist movement, and the role of women in religious and political resistance. She has authored or co-edited several books, including Women of the “Promised Land” (2018) and The Reverend Jennie Johnson and African Canadian History (2013). Her SSHRC Insight Grant (2016–2021) supported research on the Black Press in 19th-century Canada.
Reid-Maroney integrates community-based learning into her teaching, fostering collaborative projects between students and local historical initiatives. She advocates for “Active History,” emphasizing the relevance of historical scholarship to contemporary social challenges.
