Nina Boulus-Rødje is an Associate Professor in the Department of People and Technology at Roskilde University, Denmark, specializing in sustainable digitalization, socio-technical systems, and ethnographic research across welfare, healthcare, and conflict zones. Her work investigates technology design and implementation through interdisciplinary lenses including Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with emphasis on practical fieldwork in diverse global contexts.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Communication, Simon Fraser University (2010)
- M.Sc. in Informatics (Information Systems), University of Oslo (2004)
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, Norwegian University of Technology and Science (2001)
Research focuses on sustainable digitalization (green IT, energy monitoring), conflict-area innovation (Palestinian tech entrepreneurship), and welfare/healthcare technologies (e-voting systems, Electronic Health Records). Methodologically, she pioneers co-creative ethnography and interventionist research, blending Actor-Network Theory with participatory design to address UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable communities and responsible consumption. Her approach emphasizes reflexive fieldwork in complex settings, from Danish households to occupied Palestine.
Recent publications (2022-2025) reveal three dominant trends: (1) Sustainable digitalization through gaming interventions for household energy practices; (2) Hybrid work transformation addressing inherent asymmetries in synchronous collaboration; and (3) Ethnographic explorations of crisis-fieldwork dynamics. These intersect with her long-standing focus on welfare technologies and healthcare systems, demonstrating consistent methodological rigor across domains.
Dr. Boulus-Rødje leads and contributes to major research initiatives including the active Green IT-procurement (2024-2028) and Game For Green (2023-2026) projects. She serves on PhD evaluation committees and institutional review boards for Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Stockholm University, while organizing international events like the 2022 EUSSET Summer School on CSCW. Her collaborative network spans 9 research projects with partners across Europe and Canada.
She actively shapes research communities through 27 documented activities including conference organization, peer review, and committee memberships, reflecting deep engagement with Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Information Systems scholarship. Current work explores GenAI's impact on workplace practices and sustainable technology adoption through ongoing projects.
