Dr. Nima Haghdadi is an Associate Professor in Metallurgy at Imperial College London's Department of Materials (since June 2025), previously holding roles as Senior Lecturer at Imperial (2024–2025) and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at UNSW Sydney (2024–present). He has held academic positions including Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Fellow (2017–2019) and postdoctoral roles at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH. His research focuses on microstructure-property relationships in metallic materials, particularly in additive manufacturing, with applications in aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.
Dr. Haghdadi's expertise spans fundamental metallurgy and industry-applied research, emphasizing grain boundary engineering and phase transformation dynamics. He has supervised 6 PhD and 5 MSc students and serves as an Editor for the Journal of Materials Science. His work has been recognized with awards like the TFS Cowley-Moodie award and Acta Materialia student award.
His group investigates materials such as advanced steels, Ni-based superalloys, and high-entropy alloys, leveraging advanced characterization techniques like 3D electron backscatter diffraction. Research themes include optimizing mechanical performance via microstructural design and understanding thermal-mechanical processing effects.
Key achievements include pioneering studies on additive manufacturing of Ni-based superalloys and developing methodologies to enhance corrosion and wear resistance in stainless steels. He actively contributes to professional organizations like Materials Australia and TMS.
