Professor Nicholas Jones is the Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD (2008) and MEng (2005) in Materials Science and Engineering from Imperial College London.
- Education:
- MEng Materials Science and Engineering (Imperial College London, 2005)
- PhD (Imperial College London, 2008)
His research focuses on alloy development for aerospace and biomedical applications, particularly phase transformations in titanium and nickel-based superalloys, high-entropy alloys, and additive manufacturing processes. Recent work explores microstructural stability, superelasticity, and degradation mechanisms in Ti-Nb-Zr-Sn and AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr systems.
Key trends in his publications include investigations of martensitic transformations, intermetallic precipitates, and thermal cycling effects in advanced alloys. He has contributed to understanding oxide scale formation and mechanical behavior in cobalt-based superalloys.
- Scientific Honors:
- Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy (2023)
At Cambridge, he leads research at the Rolls-Royce UTC, utilizing facilities like the Scanning Electron Microscope and Directed Energy Deposition systems. His work intersects materials science, metallurgy, and applications in aerospace, biomedical devices, and hydrogen-rich fuel technologies.
