Nils W. Metternich is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at University College London (UCL), Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences. His academic journey includes a PhD in Government from the University of Essex and a postdoctoral position at Duke University in the Department of Political Science.
Professor Metternich's research focuses on the strategic nature of civil conflicts and the prediction of their dynamics. His work spans multiple dimensions of conflict studies, including ethnic power-sharing, peacekeeping operations, conflict forecasting, and strategic behavior in civil wars. He has made significant contributions to methodological approaches in conflict research, particularly in the areas of duration analysis and prediction modeling.
His research output demonstrates a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated conflict forecasting models, with recent work focusing on predicting fatality levels in armed conflicts and examining the economic impacts of peacekeeping operations. Metternich's publications show a consistent integration of network analysis, spatial econometrics, and advanced statistical methods to understand complex conflict dynamics.

Metternich leads and contributes to several significant research projects including the Pan-African Conferences Dataset project (funded by British Academy/Leverhulme), which examines the role of anti-colonial networks in shaping post-colonial African states, and the 'Predicting the escalation of conflict' project (funded by the Economic and Social Research Council). He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Peace Research and has developed software packages and web-based prediction tools for government and non-government users.
