Nils Rickardsson is a Clinical Academic and Research Fellow in Clinical Health Psychology at the University of Strathclyde since 2023, working within Prof Chris Graham's research group. He holds clinical positions as a Principal Clinical Psychologist in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde stroke service, with prior experience in neurorehabilitation and chronic pain.
His research focuses on rehabilitation psychology and psychological approaches to wellbeing in health conditions, particularly using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to improve stroke rehabilitation and cancer wellbeing. Key areas include caregiver support for acquired brain injury, psychological flexibility, and remotely delivered interventions.
His recent publications demonstrate strong trends in caregiver wellbeing for acquired brain injury contexts, with emphasis on systematic reviews of remote interventions and the role of psychological flexibility. Both works highlight interdisciplinary connections between clinical psychology, neuroscience, and rehabilitation science.
Clinically, he maintains active roles in NHS stroke services while holding honorary academic positions: Honorary Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Warwick. His current research fellowship is attached to an NIHR-funded oncology prehabilitation trial (PROPEL) and an MND Scotland project on Acceptance Commitment Therapy.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing, with research fingerprint showing significant activity in wellbeing (100%), psychological flexibility (88%), caregiver support (88%), and acquired brain injury (88%).
