Professor Nils Bunnefeld is a leading academic at the University of Stirling's Biological and Environmental Sciences department. His work bridges natural and social sciences to address biodiversity conservation, climate change, and sustainable development. He has held roles from Lecturer (2012) to his current Professorship since 2017. Bunnefeld earned a PhD from Imperial College London and advanced degrees from the University of Groningen and University of Göttingen.
His research focuses on resolving conflicts between biodiversity and food security, leveraging interdisciplinary tools like online games (e.g., EcoKnowGames, Restore) to engage stakeholders. Notable projects include the EU-funded RestoreID (2024-2027), exploring ecosystem restoration and disease risk, and Eco-Ready (2022-2026), advancing European food system resilience. He directs the MSc Environmental Management (Conservation) and co-leads the Centre for Policy, Conflict and Cooperation Research (CPCCR).
Bunnefeld advises the Beacon Project on hydropower-SDG trade-offs and chairs Eklipse's Knowledge Coordination Body, bridging science and policy. He also contributes to global initiatives like the AEWA Technical Committee and Scotland's National Goose Forum. His work emphasizes participatory governance, adaptive management, and transdisciplinary solutions to environmental challenges.
