University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesyمعرفی
Nikolay Kerenchev is an Associate Professor at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG) in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he works in the Faculty of Transport Engineering, Department of Geotechnics. He has been with the university since 2011, progressing from Assistant to Senior Assistant, and finally to Associate Professor in 2023. His work focuses on geotechnical engineering with particular expertise in soil dynamics, geothermal energy applications, and slope stability analysis.
His educational background includes:
- 1999-2004: PGEE (Polytechnic University of Plovdiv)
- 2004-2010: UACEG, Transport Construction (German program)
- 2004-2011: TU Wien, Bauingenieurwesen (Civil Engineering)
Dr. Kerenchev's research interests span the dynamics of construction soils, geotechnical modeling, geothermal energy applications, and laboratory methods in geotechnics. His work particularly focuses on the seismic response of soil structures, tailings dam stability, and geogrid-reinforced road embankments. He has made significant contributions to understanding small strain stiffness of soils and the application of geothermal energy in transportation infrastructure. His research combines theoretical analysis with practical engineering applications, often utilizing finite element modeling to solve complex geotechnical problems.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward analyzing tailings dams and their seismic stability using advanced computational methods. A significant portion of his work focuses on the Struma Motorway construction projects in Bulgaria, examining cut-fill slope problems and geotechnical challenges. He has also published extensively on geogrid-reinforced pavements and the application of geothermal energy in embankments. His research bridges traditional geotechnical engineering with sustainable construction practices, particularly in the area of renewable energy integration.
Dr. Kerenchev has participated in numerous research projects including studies on static and dynamic soil parameters, inverse analysis methods, geothermal applications at TU Wien, optimization of road reinforcement structures in steep terrain, and seismic analysis of tailings impoundments in Bulgaria. He also engages in consulting and design activities related to geotechnical modeling, soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and tunnel construction.
He teaches several key courses including "Construction Rock Mechanics," "Construction of a Metro by Open Method" (for Master's students), "Special Foundation," "Underground Transport Facilities," and "Computer Methods in Geotechnical Design," all within the Transportation Construction specialty. His reception hours are scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for certification of lectures and exercises.
