Nikolaus Overtoom is an Associate Professor of History at Washington State University (WSU), specializing in Ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern History. He holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University (2016), an M.A. from the University of Maryland (2011), and a B.A. from the University of North Texas (2008). His research focuses on the Hellenistic world, Parthian Empire formation, Roman Republic/Empire dynamics, and ancient militarism, with a notable book Reign of Arrows: The Rise of the Parthian Empire in the Hellenistic Middle East (Oxford UP, 2020). Overtoom advises the WSU International History Honor Society (Phi Alpha Theta) and the History Club. His grants include the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Teaching Grant (2021) and Gorham Fund Grants (2017–2019). His work bridges military strategy, political transitions, and empire-building in antiquity, often challenging traditional narratives of Parthian and Roman historiography.
