His research examines the intersection of military organization, political structures, and cultural dynamics in Republican Rome and the Hellenistic world. His first book, Soldiers and Silver (2020), analyzes how Rome's republican systems enabled large military campaigns despite limited revenue. Current work investigates the citizen army of the Middle Republic, an amateur militia led by elected officers.
Prof. Taylor's scholarly output spans military discipline, taxation, panoply, sexuality, and battlefield tactics. Recent publications include analyses of Roman internal security under the Flavians, cultural interaction in bathhouses, and the evolution of mail armor. His teaching includes undergraduate courses on ancient Mediterranean history, Roman Republic, and War and Society in Europe to 1789.
